Green River below Flaming Gorge - Trip limited to 10 people

Leader is Anita Crossland

We will be fishing the beautiful Green River below Flaming Gorge dam in northern Utah.  The Green is Utah's most famous trout river.  This is a world-class fishery with clear emerald green waters flowing through a steep red-rock canyon lined with ponderosa pine trees.  This can be a wade, float or guide-hire trip.

Target Species: Browns, rainbow and hybrid cutt-bow trout, mountain whitefish also present.  Average size in a 2022 survey was 15.5 inches with 25% more than 17 inches.

Drive time: 3.5 hrs., 200 miles.

Level of fishing difficulty: The fish are plentiful, with some of the highest fish density per mile (10,000) in the west, but fishing for them can be somewhat challenging.

Access: Paved road for the upper section ('A section"), some good dirt road on the lower sections.

Accommodations:  A number of campgrounds are available near the river including Cedar Spring in Ashley National Forest and Dripping Springs campground.  Showers are available at the Deer Run Campground and Mustang Ridge for campers with proof of camping registration.  Local lodges in the area include the Flaming Gorge Resort and Red Canyon Lodge.

Weather:  Cool nights and comfortable daytime temperatures.

Terrian: There are numerous access points adjacent to the river, often with good dirt parking.  Can fish the river from the campsite simply by walking.

Wading difficulty: Moderate with deep water and large boulders common.  Good walking path along the 7-mile length of the upper (A section) portion of the river immediately below the dam.  The water is very cold so wet wading can be very difficult.  New Zealand mudsnails have been documented in most areas, as well as Whirling Disease.  To help prevent the spread of these, please thoroughly clean mud and vegetation form waders, boats and fishing gear.  A hot bath (120 degrees) will kill mudsnails, and spraying equipment with 409 cleaner or similar soap solution before drying will increase the effectiveness.

License:  Utah fishing license required.
